ghosts
she doesn't know much about herself, what time she is upon, or where she belongs.
all she knows is tears that creep down her cheeks and seep into her ears.
warm and wet, like tongue on cartilage.
she envisions ghosts who sit in rocking chairs and knit afghans.
ghosts with needles and ghosts who can't walk.
ghosts with faux velvet crowns. ghosts whose teeth are not real.
ghosts who taught her how to tie french knots and ghosts who know what a paper mill smells like.
ghosts who gnaw their fingernails down to nubs.
ghosts she forgot to kiss and ghosts she never got to say good-bye to.

blacktop
and i'm standing there feeling the blood pulsating in my temples when suddenly the pavement comes up to meet me. in an instant you are at my side, saying are you okay and is there anything i can do to help. i shake my head sadly, because you are too far gone to know there is nothing you can do. i smiled at you earlier, and you smiled back - but not at me. you smiled past me and my heart felt like it was breaking all over again. i want to tell you this, i want to tell you all of this, but instead i heave myself up off the blacktop and walk away. i leave you standing there, squinting into the sun.
